How to run a search

Home page

Home page

Search

A basic initial search can be run on the web site’s home page itself. To do this, write theword you want to look up in the box in the middle, and press enter, or choose the word youwant from the list that expands the moment you start writing. The result will be displayed onthe consultation interface.

The language pairs appearing above the search box indicate the dictionaries in which the search can be run. The active dictionary is highlighted. The default option is eu-es; so if nothing else is indicated, the first search will be made in the eu-es /es-eu dictionary, i.e. it will search for words in Basque and in Spanish. If you select the eu-en language pair, the search will be run in the eu-en/en-eu dictionary, and the same with the eu-fr pair.

Whatever search you run, the result will be displayed on a second screen. If you want to go straight to the consultation interface without running a search on the home page, click on Advanced search, which is below the box.

Entry searches

If you wish to specify which language you want to run a search in, you need to click on one of the options (Basque, Spanish, French or English) in the list to the right of the search item box. If you choose Basque, you can see the results from the three dictionaries. In fact, the three boxes below that box are target languages, and the search will be run in the languages you have marked. If you do not want the content of one of these languages to be displayed in the consultation results, you just need to disable the box. If you choose a foreign language in the list of languages, you will see that Basque is the only target language on the right.

Adibidez, azpirekin hasten diren sarrerak eta azpisarrerak aurkitzeko, aski da bilagaiaren laukian azpi idatzi, eta Bilatu botoia edo Intro tekla sakatzea, betiere % irudiaren ondoko aukera aktibatuta dagoela. Horrelakorik nahi ez baduzu, hau da, kontsulta-sistemak zure bilagaiaren amaieran automatikoki % eranstea nahi ez baduzu, % irudiaren ondoko aukera desaktibatu egin behar duzu. Bestetik, halako amaiera duten hitzak bilatu nahi badituzu, % irudiaren ondoko aukera desaktibatu, bilagaiaren hasieran % idatzi, eta, jarraian, nahi duzun amaiera. Esaterako, bilagaiaren laukian %pen idatzita, -pen amaiera duten sarrerak eta azpisarrerak bistaratuko dira.

Result

The list of entries or sub-entries that fit the search specifications will appear on the left below the heading Dictionary Units. The list is in alphabetical order (in multi-word units, the hyphen is not taken into account, but blank spaces are).

If you click on one of the units in this list, the relevant content appears in the middle; whenthe results are displayed for the first time, the content of the first in the list will open out.

The entry word is above, and it is followed by a number of symbols

  • doinua Listen to how the word is pronounced, by means of the Aholab-Elhuyar voice synthesizer

  • forvo The pronunciation of the word can be heard by means of Forvo

  • forvo Hitza partekatzeko hainbat aukera:

    • tweet Share the word on Twitter

    • facebook Share the word on Facebook

  • komentarioa Send a comment on the word

The article of an entry is organised into senses.

The Equivalents section is also structured. The equivalents or translations that a word has in each sense, taking the level of equivalence between them as the criterion, are organised into groups of related terms, separated by semi-colons. The necessary information is added to the groups of related terms through usage notes, geographical area labels and semantic labels. Some examples:

When an equivalent or translation is the entry or sub-entry in the other part of the dictionary, it is highlighted in bold type, and has a link to go directly to the relevant entry or sub-entry.

After the senses, the sub-entries corresponding the main entry are listed. If you click on any of them, the information on it is displayed.

We can access the information about the sub-entries through the main entry; but it is not the only way. In fact, the entries and sub-entries are displayed in the results of the dictionary consultation (the Dictionary Units). So you can go straight to a sub-entry through that list. If you click on the sub-entry you want to look up, only the relevant content will be displayed below, not the whole entry. However, the entry in which that sub-entry can be found in the dictionary will appear above, and there is a link to go there directly.

Whenever Ik. xxx appears in the equivalents of the entries and sub-entries, it means that xxx is the spelling accepted in standard Basque. But if h. xxx appears, it means that xxx is the preferred spelling. In many names of species, the standard form is indicated by an arrow () to refer the user to another entry in the Basque section. In the Spanish section the abbreviation tekn. (technicism) is used next to the standard Basque form.

Search in translations

Through this search mode, you find out what entry translations or equivalents are given in the dictionary for the word entered in the search item box. First you need to specify which language you want to run a search in by clicking on one of the choices in the list to the right of the search item box (Basque, Spanish, French or English). For example, to find out what equivalent word in Spanish is given for the Basque word koaderno, click on the Translations option and select Basque as the search item language. When you run a search, you will have the list of Spanish entries on the left, below the Dictionary Units heading.
